Texas Cichlid Scientific Name: Herichthys cynoguttatus Home Range: Northern Mexico, Texas Max Size: 12" Minimum Tank Size: 55 Gallons Temperament: Aggressive Temperature: 72-76°F pH: Neutral Diet: Omnivore Swimming Zone: Middle Texas Cichlid General Information The Texas Cichlid is sometimes refered to as the Rio Grande Perch or Rio Grande Cichlid. This species is quite aggressive and needs plenty of room to set up and maintain a terriotory of its own. These fish love to dig and will make short work of live plants. However floating plants are recommended as these fish enjoy using them as cover. Other possable decor include driftwood, large rocks, and a thick layer of sandy substrate. These fish can be quite messy so plan on having alot of filtration and be prepared to do weekly water changes/gravel sweepings. Breeding Information Sexing Texas Cichlids is quite difficult at best. The males are generally larger and may develop a cranial hump as they mature. These fish are egg layers and will spawn on flat rocks and slate. Most people remove the eggs after they are laid as these cichlids have a tendency to consume their fry. By www.cichliddepot.com/library/american/index2.php
