The Red Devil
General Information
Red Devils are large and aggressive cichlids. A single specimen will need a minimum of a 55 gallon tank. The larger the better. Red Devils are best kept alone or with similier sized fish of their own kind. If you choose to house them with another species be sure that it can hold its own with such a bad tempered fish as the red devil! Remember the more space you give your fish the less chance you will have of encountering fighting due to over crowding and territorial disputes. When it comes to decorating your tank large sturdy objects are recommended. Red devils are notorious diggers and will make short work of your decor. Large rocks, flower pots, and perhaps a strong piece of driftwood are your best bet.
Red devils are not fussy eaters and will accept a large variety of foods. As carnivores they require a diet of foods which contain meat. Beefheart, worms, crickets, krill, and pellets are all good food sources for your fish.
Breeding Information
Sexing of Red Devils is not too difficult. The males of the species will grow a large hump on the top of their head. When your fish form a pair you may notice a breeding tube between the vent and anal fin. You may also notice the soon to be parents cleaning off a preplaced rock or piece of slate in preparation for the spawn. An average brood will usually consist of around 150-400 eggs. Red Devils are usually thought as good parents and will care for and protect their fry very well. Including from you so watch your fingers!
