Ram Cichlid
General Information
The Ram is a small (3 in.), cichlid from South America. The Ram is quite a peaceful fish, which may actually be picked on by its larger and/or more aggressive tankmates. They may however, display some aggression when breeding. The Ram can be kept with other small South American cichlids, such as Discus and Angel Fish. Decorate your tank with live plants, rocks, driftwood and plenty of places to hide and establish territory. The Ram is very sensitive to even slightly bad water conditions, so special attention must be made in keeping your tank as clean as possable. These cichlids prefer a pH between 6.5 and 7.0, with a temperature in the middle to high seventies. Feed your fish a mix of frozen, freezed dried and flake foods.
Breeding Information
The female Ram is generally smaller than the male of the species. They will also have a more rounded out body and display a pinkish area on thier stomach. Once a pair is formed these cichlids will search out and start meticulously preparing a spawning site. Rams are egglayers and generally lay their brood on a flat surface such as a rock or piece of slate. After the eggs are laid both parents will share the responsibility of fanning, tending, and guarding the eggs. After the eggs hatch you can expect any where from 75-200 new additions to your aquarium. Feed the fry baby brine shrimp and/or crushed flake food.
