If you do add more than a single specimen be sure to give each fish plenty of room with a large tank. When decorating your tank assemble plenty of places for you cichlid to stake out and claim while leaving plenty of open swimming space. The use of driftwood and large rocks will acomplish this quite nicely and will also be sturdy enough to handle most attempts to thrash your work by your new fishy friends. You can also try your hand at adding in live/artificial plants but be sure to get a nice hardy strain if adding the live variety.
This cichlid should be fed a diet consisting of foods such as beefheart, earthworms, redworms, krill, and the like. A regimen of a quality pellet based food is great, but before mentioned treats should be offered reguarly to keep your fish healthy and satisfied.
Breeding Information
These fish spawn in the normal SA fashion. The female will lay her eggs on a flat rock or piece of slate previously cleared and dug out by the couple. Once laid the male will then sweep over the eggs fertalizing them. The Chocolate Cichlid has been known to engage in very aggressive courtship. It is not too uncommon for one or both of the couple to be injured or even killed during the breeding process so special attention should be made to their behaviour at these times.
