General Information
The Krebensis is a small cichlid from the Niger River Delta in Africa. These cichlids are quite hardy but being a river fish they will need very clean water to thrive. Decorate your tank with plenty of live plants and a wide assortment of places to hide and/or establish territory. Kribs, while usually peaceful can become quite territorial during breeding. Tankmates may include other dwarf cichlids or similarly sized fish. Being omnivours these fish will require both plant and meat based foods. Foods such as flakes, brine shrimp, spinach, mosquito largae and other frozen foods all make wise choices. Be sure to vary the diet as much as possable by trying new foods and treats.
Breeding Information
Determining the sex of the Krebensis is very difficult to accomplish when the fish are juveniles. After they reach adulthood though you can look for the female to have a smaller, more rounded body than the male. You may also notice that the females colors will be brighter than the males.
Once a pair is formed these fish will usually breed quite regularly. The Krib is a hidden brooder and will not breed out in the open like some other cichlids. Caves, pots, driftwood and other various structures that are well concealed are all places to look for your fish to spawn. The female will lay between 100-300 eggs per spawn. The Krebensis make good parents and will guard and raise their young very well. Once they fry reach the free swimming stage feed them crushed flake foods and/or baby brine shrimp.
