Jewel Cichlid
Scientific Name: Hemichromis bimaculatus
Home Range: Africa
Max Size: 6"
Minimum Tank Size: 30 Gallons
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Temperature: 74-79°F
pH: 6.5 - 8.0
Diet: Omnivorous
Swimming Zone: All
The Jewel Cichlid
General Information
Jewel cichlids can be quite aggressive towards smaller fish, so they are best kept with cichlids a bit larger then themselves. An ideal setup would be an aquarium 20g +, 30 recommenced. Keep with tank mates such as Convicts and other semi-aggressive cichlids. Tank should have caves and rock work with lots of cover, as these fish can be quite shy. Jewels like to dig a lot so provide substrate small enough so they can dig easily. Like live foods as well as pellets, feed brine shrimp, feeder guppies, ghost shrimp, beef heart, blood worms, cichlid pellets, and flake foods.
Breeding Information
Males and females can be quite difficult to tell apart. Males tend to have a more blue tinge to their colour, while females have more of a red, especially underneath there mouths. Females tend to be more short and stubby as well. After a pair is formed, they will pick a territory to breed, such as a cave with some sort of slate underneath. The female will lay anywhere from 50 - 200+ eggs, which both parents will guard. Eggs will hatch in few days, and wigglers may be moved to another area of the tank. Fry will be moved to new locations all the time, maybe several times a day. Feed the fry crushed flake, or baby brine shrimp. A pair may produce once a month if conditions are right.
