There Are questions you should ask or research every time you decide to make purchase of a new fish. These are best researched online as a lot (not all) petshop employees may not know, or may give false information to make a quick sale. Find out as much about the species you are buying before purchase to avoid buying an unsuitable, large or agressive fish.
1. How big does the fish eventually get? (will it fit in your tank or eventually cause problems when it gets too large ?)
2. What does it eat (some fish may be picky, have specific diets or even eat other live fish!)
3. Is it agressive? (some fish may chase or even kill or eat others, research of a species temperment and tankmates is always good)
4. What environment does it need? some fish like to hide, some like to swim in open water, some like to burrow in sand or live in piles of rock.
5. Will it go with other fish that I have? Some species are incompatable due to environment, temprature, temperment, ph or even swimming space.
6. Does it eat plants?
7. How Long does it live?
8. Is it Messy? ( some fish like goldfish, carp and comon plecos are so messy they reduce the number of OTHER fish you can keep in the tank with them)
