have noticed a lot of male plakat (shortfin fighters) coming in with every shipment of female fighters. they are near-impossible to find where I live normally so are a great find. normally they need to be specialy ordered at around $38 but if you have a keen eye, look in the girls tank and get them for about $5! here is one I just found.

over here they dont seem to know much about plakat. Some friends and I have picked up some beautiful mustard gas plakats, a giant plakat and some traditional ones like the one above. previously we were importing them at great cost but now one company (known for being very dodgy) seems to be using short-fin males as fillers in their female orders. either that or they dont have a clue how to sex betta.

I just bought a what I thought was a female betta at Walmart and placed the container next to my male betta's tank and after a day of no aggressive behavior, I placed the supposed female in the tank and it began to flare its gills and both fish were displaying toward one. The next thing I know the sold as female betta darted at my male crowntail and they began to fight! I immediately removed the sold as female betta and looked up that it is really a plakat male betta that I bought at Walmart. Figures coming from Walmart...but I stood there and lloked at each and everyone to find the most colorful one, and it turned out to be a male plakat (should've figured since it was so colorful). So Walmart would be a good source to get a male plakat for $3.98. Just have to look at each individual one and I recntly learned that female bettas have a white "egg" spot on their belly. So look for the most colorful female that Walmart has, without a white spot on its belly and you got yourself a male plakat brtta for a really cheap price.

My local walmart never has females. theyre ALL PLAKATS. bought one for my sorority without checking for an egg spot, noticed my mistake pretty quickly when i got home and my boys in their tanks started flaring when i showed the new "female" off to them.
