Have had a recent difficult problem with some male betta.
No tankmates, in 3 gal breeding tank. waterchanges 25% weekly, small changes every few days when syphoning waste, no recent changes. Temp, ranges between 24-26c. PH 6.8 nitrite . Ammonia 0. Nitrate around 20
problem: they get skinny and lethargic and seem to have a little trouble breathing. after a few days their fins get clamped and a yellowish grainy substance can be seen between the scales. I think it may be some kind of velvet but it is very stubborn even with salt and velvet treatment. any tips with getting rid of this disease. am also adding salt.

For a velvet treatment, the best thing I have found is still the old way.A new bright copper penny.Leave it in the tank for no more that 14 days.7-10 days normally is all the time that is needed. Then a water change with extra water conditioner. Good luck with your fish

Thanks Madmike, I have been using a copper treatment I found (no copper coins in Aus) they seem to be getting a little better and the gold stuff is disappearing. One male is displaying again happily but the other is still got a little bit of stuff on him but looking better. Thanks!

Seems like there is a lot of it about here, did you buy him from 'Pet Cemetary' in the kingsway? Or one of their other stores. their bettas are in pretty horrible shape ATM.
