there are a lot of aquarium fish that will appreciate fresh fruit and veg but which ones are best?
veg like lettuce and cucumber are readily accepted and will cause no harm to fish but are very low in nutrients, their high water content will also cause them to spoil in the tank more rapidly. the cucumber is best replaced with zuccini (corgette) and the lettuce is best replaced with baby spinach. these have a slightly higher mineral and nutrient rate.
if you are feeding any flat algae eating catfish (loricards, commonly called plecos) then some very good options are fresh pumpkin or sweet potato. these are more dense and will offer more nutrition and less waste.
fruits and veg such as beans, peas removed from shells, apples are also good options. avoid any fruit too soft or sugary and veg such as brassicas (the cabbage and broccoli family) as these may either quickly spoil in the tank or cause gas problems. all fruit and veg are best given in as raw a state as possible as most nutrients are destroyed by cooking and heat.
